Ankle Pain
What Is Ankle Pain?
Ankle pain refers to discomfort or pain in or around the ankle joint, which may affect one or both ankles. The ankle is a complex joint that connects the foot to the leg, allowing movement, balance, and weight-bearing during daily activities such as walking, running, or standing. Because multiple structures—including bones, ligaments, tendons, and nerves—can contribute to ankle pain, accurately identifying the underlying cause is essential before treatment begins.
The most common causes of ankle pain include injuries, overuse, and medical conditions. Injuries such as ankle sprains, fractures, or Achilles tendon problems can lead to sudden, severe pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. Overuse conditions, including tendinitis, bursitis, or stress fractures, often develop gradually due to repetitive strain. Chronic medical conditions, such as arthritis, gout, flat feet, or tarsal tunnel syndrome, can also contribute to ongoing discomfort and reduced mobility.
Although ankle pain is common, effective, evidence-based treatment options are available. At our clinic, our team of dedicated podiatrists uses a thorough assessment process—including clinical evaluation, with diagnostic imaging available at our ultrasound clinic when necessary—to identify the exact cause of pain. This enables us to create a tailored, individualised management plan that addresses the underlying problem and helps patients return to pain-free movement.
