Ingrowing Toenails

What is an ingrowing toenail?

A naturally curved nail shape can cause an ingrowing toenail, which develops when part of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, often causing pain, redness, swelling, and, in some cases, infection. The big toe is most commonly affected. Other common causes include incorrect nail cutting, pressure from tight or poorly fitting footwear, or injury to the toe.

If left untreated, ingrowing toenails can become increasingly painful and may lead to infection, resulting in discharge, swelling, or inflammation. Our podiatrists are experienced in treating ingrowing toenails and can offer a range of management options, from conservative treatment to partial nail removal. In more persistent or severe cases, a minor nail procedure may be recommended to help prevent recurrence.

We advise against attempting to treat ingrowing toenails yourself, as this can increase discomfort and the risk of infection. If you are experiencing ongoing toe pain or signs of an ingrowing toenail, please book an assessment with one of our podiatrists, and we will be happy to help.
