Fungal Nails & Skin Infections At Essex Podiatry Clinics

Fungal nail and skin infections can be persistent issues that affect not only the health of your feet, but confidence in your overall appearance.

At Essex Podiatry Clinics, we offer expert diagnosis and advanced treatment options, including the innovative Clearanail® therapy, to help you regain healthy nails.

Understanding Nail & Skin Infections

What Are Fungal Nail & Skin Infections?

Fungal skin infections are common conditions caused by fungi. Because fungi thrive in warm, damp environments, the feet are particularly vulnerable. Wearing tight or non-breathable shoes, damp socks, swimming baths, communal showers, or damaged skin can all increase risk.

If left untreated, the infection can cause complications such as fungal nail infections, which cause discolouration (yellow, brown, white) and thickening of the nail. This can lead to discomfort, difficulty trimming nails, deformity, and spread to other nails or surrounding skin. It may also affect individuals with diabetes or poor circulation at a higher rate.

Fungal infections can be long-lasting, and by treating them early we aim to restore the appearance and function of affected nails and skin, reduce any associated pain, and minimise the chance of the issue recurring.

Our Fungal Nail & Skin Treatments

We offer a spectrum of therapies, some for mild or early-stage infections, others for more advanced or treatment-resistant cases.

Clearanail® Therapy

One of our most effective, innovative solutions is Clearanail®, a non-invasive therapy designed to offer fast and effective results. As it doesn’t rely on a chemical to penetrate over the nail, Clearanail® can be particularly helpful in thicker or more resistant infections.

How It Works

  • Tiny holes are made in the nail using the Clearanail® device. This allows for more a targeted treatment as the anti-fungal treatment can be applied at a deeper level within the nail.
  • Preparing the holes takes around 30 minutes, and the procedure is painless.
  • A visible improvement can be seen in just 2-8 weeks, though you may require more than one treatment.

Other Treatment Options

Topical Antifungals

For milder cases, solutions containing anti-fungal ingredients can be effective when painted onto the nail, especially when the infection is superficial and the nail plate hasn’t hardened. Thicker, or more long-standing infections, may be resistant to this treatment option, but your podiatrist or foot health practitioner will be able to discuss this with you.

Oral Antifungals

In suitable patients, prescription oral antifungal medications may be suitable. These heal the infection by supporting the body’s natural healing process from within.

Nail Reconstruction

If your nail has become damaged beyond repair or you would like it to be improved aesthetically, nail reconstruction is a cosmetic procedure that we offer at Essex Podiatry Clinics. You can find out more about this here.

What to Expect With Your Treatment

Find answers to common questions about treatment success, recovery timelines, prevention, and potential risks. Our clinicians will guide you through what influences results and how to achieve the best long-term outcome.

Several factors determine how well your chosen treatment works and which approaches to use. Your podiatrist will discuss each option with you, but as a general overview, this includes:

  • Severity & duration of the infection
  • Thickness of the nail and how much of it is affected
  • Type of fungal infection involved
  • Your health status, such as circulation, immune system, diabetic status and liver function
  • Any previous treatments and your response to these

As with any fungal infection, there are several ways in which you can help to prevent the infection recurring, including:

  • Maintaining clean, dry feet
  • Using antifungal sprays inside shoes
  • Avoid sharing socks or shoes
  • Wearing swim shoes or flip flops at the swimming baths, or sauna/steam rooms
  • Addressing underlying foot or vascular issues

Your podiatrist or foot health practitioner will monitor your progress, however, treating fungal nail or skin infections can be a lengthy process. Nails are one of the slowest growing parts of our bodies, and several courses of the treatment that you choose is likely.

Typical timelines:

  • Initial improvement: visible in weeks to months (reduced discolouration, smoother surface), especially prominent after being treated with Clearanail®.
  • Healthy regrowth: New, healthy nail growth will gradually push out the infected area
  • Full regrowth: may take 6 to 12 months, depending on the severity

As with every course of treatment, there are no guarantees that recurrence won’t happen. Every procedure has its own limitations, including not being suitable for patients with certain medical issues. This is why at Essex Podiatry Clinics we offer a holistic approach, always ensuring that we look at your medical history and lifestyle, to suggest the best option for you. We will review all risks and likelihoods during your consultation so that you can make an informed choice.
