General Footcare At Essex Podiatry Clinics

At Essex Podiatry Clinics, we believe that good foot health is about more than treating problems when they arise; it’s about prevention and sharing our knowledge. Our general footcare service range is designed to help you maintain healthy feet at every stage of life.

Understanding General Footcare

What Does General Footcare Cover?

General Footcare involves more than simply cutting toenails, although we do offer this too! It’s a complete approach to maintaining the health and comfort of your feet. Regular appointments allow us to identify potential issues early, which gives us the opportunity to discuss preventative measures and provide more effective treatments that support long-term wellbeing.

Maintaining good foot health means that you can stay mobile and pain-free, and with the right advice most problems can be prevented before they start.

Preventing Common Skin & Nail Problems

Routine Skin & Nail Care

Our podiatrists and foot health specialists provide expert maintenance for all aspects of skin and nail health. This includes assessing and treating dryness, cracks, infections and nail conditions, to keep your feet in optimum condition. This type of care is ideal for anyone who struggles to reach their feet, has recurring issues, or simply prefers the reassurance of professional treatment and advice.

Callus & Corns

Hard skin (callus) and corns develop when pressure or friction builds up on certain areas of the feet, often caused by footwear or underlying biomechanical issues. Whilst over-the-counter products might provide temporary relief, professional treatment tends to be much more effective in the long-term.

Your podiatrist or foot health specialist will gently remove the hard skin or corn and identify the cause; they’ll also advise on how to prevent recurrence.

Addressing Specific Concerns

Sometimes, general footcare appointments reveal early signs of other conditions; from fungal infections and verrucas to ingrowing toenails. We’ll always take the time to explain what’s going on and suggest the most effective treatment option.

Our goal is simple: to prevent small issues from becoming painful or complex.

Nail Cutting

Our nail cutting appointments offer safe trimming and shaping of toenails; especially important for those with thickened or difficult-to-manage nails. Regular trimming helps to prevent ingrowing toenails, reduces pressure and discomfort in shoes and promotes healthy nail growth. We are also able to accommodate patients with diabetes and those on blood thinners during our appointments.

Early Detection of Circulatory Issues

Advanced Vascular Testing

Good circulation is vital for healthy feet, especially as you get older or if you smoke or live with conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Understanding your circulation allows us to detect early warning signs of vascular problems and recommend appropriate care to protect your foot health long-term.

Our advanced vascular testing is a painless, non-invasive way to assess how well blood is flowing to your feet and lower limbs.

Check skin temperature, colour and capillary refill time
Feel for pulses in your feet and ankles
Use a Doppler ultrasound to listen to blood flow and detect any irregularities
If needed, calculate an Ankle-Brachial Pressure Index (ABPI) to compare blood pressure in your legs and arms; a key indicator of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD)
Perform a toe pressure assessment; another advanced test that measures circulation in the smaller blood vessels of your feet

Annual Foot Health Assessment

In addition to routine footcare, we recommend arranging a comprehensive annual assessment; a full ‘health MOT’ for your feet. This goes beyond a standard appointment and includes a detailed evaluation of your vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal health. For patients with diabetes or vascular conditions, this assessment can be particularly valuable in preventing long-term problems.

During your annual assessment, we will:

Check blood flow and nerve sensation using vascular and neurological testing
Assess skin and nail condition
Examine bone structure, muscle balance and joint mobility
Evaluate risk factors such as diabetes, circulation issues or previous injuries
Review footwear and posture
