Verruca Treatment At Essex Podiatry Clinics
Verrucas, also known as plantar warts, can be painful and persistent. They often resist over-the-counter remedies and may linger for months, or even years. At Essex Podiatry Clinics, we offer three effective treatment options: Swift microwave therapy, cryo-therapy, and chemical verruca treatment.
Our podiatrists and foot health specialists will recommend the best approach based on your medical history, as well as the size and duration of your verruca.
What Is A Verruca?
A verruca is a small, wart-like lesion that appears on the soles of the feet, caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus infects feet through tiny abrasions in the skin, often in warm, moist environments like swimming pools or gyms.
Because verrucas develop predominantly on weight-bearing areas, they can sometimes form clusters known as ‘mosaic warts’. They may be painful when standing or walking and can spread to other parts of the foot or between family members.
Whilst verrucas can disappear naturally, many become persistent and require intervention for lasting eradication.
At Essex Podiatry Clinics, we are also able to treat warts that appear on other areas of the body, such as the hands. Although caused by the same family of viruses, warts and verrucas can behave differently depending on their location, depth, and duration.

Preparation
Your podiatrist will gently remove any hard skin over the verruca.
Microwave Application
A handheld probe delivers a short burst (just a few seconds) of microwave heat to the area. This begins the healing process immediately, as tissue is repaired and replaced.
Post-Treatment
You can put your shoes back on and carry on with your day, no dressings or rest needed.

Does Swift Verruca Treatment Hurt?
You may feel a momentary hot or prickling sensation during each application. This usually only lasts for a couple of seconds and most patients describe it as mild scratching sensation.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
The number of treatments can vary depending on the size and age of the verruca and how your immune system responds. Many patients heal fully within a few treatments, which will be spaced around a month apart each time.
Swift verruca treatment starts from £110
What Are the Alternative Treatments for Verrucas?
Whilst Swift therapy is one of the most advanced and effective options available, it isn’t always the right choice for every patient. At Essex Podiatry Clinics, we also offer a range of alternative verruca treatments, including chemical and cryo-therapy (freezing) methods. These options allow us to care for different skin types and medical needs.
Chemical Treatments
This involves applying carefully curated chemicals to the verruca to break down infected skin cells and encourage your immune system to respond. Your podiatrist or foot health practitioner will apply the treatment to make sure that it penetrates the area thoroughly and you will need to keep the dressing dry for up to 3 days to ensure its effectiveness. Several sessions are usually required, spaced a week or two apart. You may experience mild stinging, peeling, or tenderness around the treated area, but this usually settles quickly.
Chemical verruca treatment starts from £28
Who Is Suitable For Verruca Treatment?
We treat patients of all ages, and most people are suitable for one or all three treatment types. During your initial consultation, we’ll discuss your treatment preferences before recommending an option.
Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?
All verruca treatments are low risk, but potential minor effects include:
- Temporary soreness or blistering
- Skin irritation or mild swelling
- Recurrence of the verruca
- Delayed healing (more common with chemical and cryo-therapy methods)
